I love Kasuri. It’s way outside my wheelhouse as it is a highly skilled weaving technique that involves space dyeing skeins of thread, resisting the areas you wish to keep white.

The dyer will dip skeins 30 times in the indigo to get very intense, dark blue, almost black threads, including dyeing skeins of white threads at the same time to ensure they are the same blue as the space dyed threads.

The patterns are complex and intricate and a takes a highly skilled weaver to make a specific pattern.

I’m always on the lookout for kasuri pieces to add to my own collection and to use in my work but, inevitably I buy too much!

I’ve got three nice larger pieces here that would be great for projects and/or to add to your own collection.

The first is a large spot pattern. It feels a little stiff but probably just needs a gentle handwash to remove the starch. There are a few stains down the middle.

The second is a slightly heavier cotton with a shuttlecock and a lozenge pattern. This is super dark indigo and it’s quite a long piece.

The last piece is a full width piece in a slubby cotton. Really great indigo colour and the shuttle and zs pattern is really nicely done. It does have some stains on the folds but they may come out with a wash/dry cleaning… This is definitely the nicest piece.
