Vintage kimono silk scarf - backed - black and white kasuri motifs

Vintage kimono silk scarf - backed - black and white kasuri motifs
This is a classy piece of woven kasuri silk.
Kasuri is the term for woven fabrics that used space dyed threads to keep sections of the thread white.
The skill is in setting the weft threads and then weaving to make compled patterns. It is the Japanese version of IKAT.
Kasuri designs can be divided into two main groups: geometric and figurative themes. Geometric designs are typically created by partially dyeing the warp and weft threads (tate- yoko-kasuri), figurative kasuri are almost always weft dyed (yoko-kasuri).
The themes of these ‘picture kasuri’ (e-gasuri) are primarily intended to bring good fortune. They show plants, animals, mythological figures, as well as buildings, landscapes and symbols of good luck. Kasuri with geometric and figural motifs are particularly attractive, but complicated to make.
This kimono silk scarf features these two types of motifs and is very smart!
