Vintage katazome stencil dyed indigo cotton scarf - Chrysanthemums and Arabesques

Vintage katazome stencil dyed indigo cotton scarf - Chrysanthemums and Arabesques
Katazome is the Japanese art of using a rice paste with a finely cut paper stencil to create repeating patterns down a length of fabric. The pattern matching is highly skilled, especially with a piece such as this where the paste has been applied to both sides of the fabric to create a bright white contrast with the rich blue indigo used to dye the fabric.
The pattern is a traditional one of stylised Chrysanthemum flowers joined by Arabesque swirls.
There is a section of hand stitched indigo fabric that has been used to mend a tear on one side.
See picture.
