What will I learn?

In this class you will learn Arashi shibori and the use of poles. Pole wrapping is known as ‘Bo-maki’ shibori.

Arashi means ‘storm’ in Japan and these techniques were used to create striped and checked patterns by binding fabric to a pole and pleating it by pushing the fabric down every few turns.

Content:

– How to create simple patterns using a bamboo straw
– How to wrap the fabric around a pole and bind and pleat it using cord
– How to create Murakumo patterns by stitching running stitch down one edge of the fabric to create a sleeve to slide over the pole
– How to create different Arashi patterns :

  • Straight lines

  • Diamond patterns

– How to set up and maintain your own indigo vat at home
